Islamic Celebrations 101
Islam has two primary annual celebrations (Eid) and several other significant commemorations observed by Muslims worldwide.
Major Celebrations
- Eid al-Fitr — The Festival of Breaking the Fast, celebrated at the end of Ramadan with prayer, feasting, and giving charity.
- Eid al-Adha — The Festival of Sacrifice, commemorating Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son. Observed during the Hajj pilgrimage season with animal sacrifice (Qurbani) and community feasting.
- Mawlid al-Nabi — The birthday of the Prophet Muhammad (observed by many Muslim communities).
- Laylat al-Qadr — The Night of Power during the last 10 days of Ramadan.
- Muharram / Islamic New Year — The first month of the Islamic calendar.
